The Entrepreneur Trap: Designing a Business That Supports Your Life

Justin Welch once said, "The happiest entrepreneurs I know aren't the richest. They're the ones who built a business that complements their lives rather than consuming it." This statement resonates deeply with many of us who have ventured into entrepreneurship, only to find ourselves ensnared in a trap of our own making. The entrepreneur trap is the misconception that success is measured solely by revenue. In reality, true success lies in the freedom and fulfillment that comes from designing a business that supports your life. In the pursuit of entrepreneurial success, it's easy to fall into the trap of equating revenue with happiness. However, the happiest entrepreneurs are those who design their businesses to complement their lives rather than consume them. By working during your most productive times, pursuing an inspiring mission, and automating or delegating the rest, you can create a business that supports your life and brings true success in the form of freedom and fulfillment.

Design Your Business to Support Your Life

1. Work When You're Most Productive Understanding your natural rhythms and working during your peak productivity times can make a world of difference. Some people are morning larks, while others are night owls. Identify when you are most focused and energetic, and schedule your most important tasks during those periods. This not only boosts efficiency but also ensures that you have time for other important aspects of your life.

2. Pursue a Mission That Inspires You Building a business around a mission that truly inspires you is crucial. When your work aligns with your passions and values, it becomes more than just a job; it becomes a source of motivation and satisfaction. This intrinsic motivation can carry you through the inevitable challenges and setbacks that come with entrepreneurship.

3. Automate or Delegate the Rest To prevent your business from consuming your life, it's essential to automate or delegate tasks that don't require your personal touch. Leveraging technology for automation can streamline repetitive processes, while delegating tasks to competent team members or freelancers can free up your time for strategic planning and personal pursuits.

Success Is About Freedom and Fulfillment

Success is often measured in terms of revenue and profit margins, but true success is much broader. It encompasses the freedom to live life on your terms and the fulfillment that comes from achieving personal and professional goals. Here are some key elements to consider:

1. Work-Life Balance Achieving a healthy work-life balance is vital for long-term success and happiness. This means setting boundaries between work and personal life, ensuring you have time to relax, recharge, and spend quality time with loved ones.

2. Financial Freedom While financial success is important, it's not the only metric that matters. Financial freedom is about having enough to support your desired lifestyle without constant stress and worry. It's about making smart financial decisions that allow you to enjoy life now, not just in the distant future.

3. Personal Fulfillment Personal fulfillment comes from pursuing passions, nurturing relationships, and making a positive impact on the world. It's about feeling a sense of purpose and satisfaction in your daily activities, both in and out of the business.

Beyond Labels: How Being Multifaceted Leads to True Success

Labels can limit potential and creativity. As someone who has always taken a somewhat unconventional path, I find the term “unorthodox” not just fitting, but empowering. That’s how The UnOrthoDoc was born—a reflection of my multifaceted life that defies simple categorization.

We’re often told to specialize. Get an expensive degree, secure a niche job, and stick to it for decades. While this worked in the past, the modern world demands adaptability and a broad skill set. In today’s tech-driven society, being a specialist can sometimes mean limiting your growth and opportunities. AI and automation are rapidly changing the job market, and those with narrow expertise may find themselves left behind. I say this as a specialist myself—an orthodontist, a specialty of dentistry. I get that this is contradictory. I suppose I am a walking contradiction.

Labels can limit potential and creativity. As someone who has always taken a somewhat unconventional path, I find the term “unorthodox” not just fitting, but empowering. That’s how The UnOrthoDoc was born—a reflection of my multifaceted life that defies simple categorization.

The Trap of Specialization

We’re often told to specialize. Get an expensive degree, secure a niche job, and stick to it for decades. While this worked in the past, the modern world demands adaptability and a broad skill set. In today’s tech-driven society, being a specialist can sometimes mean limiting your growth and opportunities. AI and automation are rapidly changing the job market, and those with narrow expertise may find themselves left behind. I say this as a specialist myself—an orthodontist, a specialty of dentistry. I get that this is contradictory. I suppose I am a walking contradiction.

Why Generalists Thrive

Being a generalist isn’t just a survival strategy; it’s a way to thrive. By embracing a wide range of skills and interests, we become more adaptable and resilient. This approach has allowed me to wear many hats—orthodontist, entrepreneur, blogger, chandler (candle maker), community builder, etc.

  1. Orthodontist: I run my own practice, providing specialized care to my patients.

  2. Entrepreneur: I founded Infinity Orthodontics, UnOrthoDoc Candle Co., combining my love for scented candles, creativity with business acumen, an aesthetic suite and even The Unorthodoc - this blog has turned into a small business over the years.

  3. Blogger: Through my blog, The UnOrthoDoc, I share insights and stories that inspire and inform.

  4. Community Builder: With The Climb, I’ve created a space where like-minded individuals can come together to learn and grow.

Embracing Contradictions

Life is full of contradictions, and that’s what makes it interesting. I juggle professional responsibilities with personal passions. I strive for a balanced lifestyle while diving deep into my work. I enjoy healthy living but don’t shy away from indulgent treats. These contradictions are not weaknesses but strengths that make me unique and adaptable.

Breaking Free from Labels

Labels can confine us. They attempt to define who we are based on limited perspectives. But life isn’t black and white, and neither are we. By rejecting these labels, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities.

For instance, people might see me as just an orthodontist, but my life encompasses much more. I manage and run the operations of businesses, build websites and landing pages, write copy, write eBooks, send newsletters and marketing emails, do accounting for the businesses (except my Ortho practice), run a book club, teach courses, hire freelancers, run a private community, do procurement, manage multiple social media accounts, and engage in various creative projects. Each of these roles adds value to my life and work, making me truly undefinable.

The Power of Storytelling

Instead of letting labels define us, we should let our stories do the talking. Our journeys, filled with challenges, failures, and successes, shape who we are. Sharing these stories not only helps others understand us better but also empowers us to take control of our narrative.

The UnOrthoDoc: A Reflection of My Journey

The name “UnOrthoDoc” embodies my approach to life and work. It represents breaking free from conventional expectations and embracing a broader, more inclusive view of success. It’s about being true to oneself and finding harmony in the chaos of diverse roles and responsibilities.

Building a Multifaceted Life

Here are some key principles that guide my unorthodox journey:

  1. Continuous Learning: Every year, I acquire new skills and knowledge. This not only keeps me relevant but also fuels my passion for growth.

  2. Flexibility: A flexible mindset allows me to adapt to new challenges and opportunities.

  3. Delegation: Understanding that I can’t do everything myself, I delegate tasks to others, enabling me to focus on what truly matters.

  4. Planning: Whether it’s setting long-term goals or managing daily tasks, planning is crucial for maintaining balance.

  5. Community: Building and nurturing a supportive community through The Climb has been instrumental in my journey.

Final Thoughts

Being undefinable is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. It’s about rejecting limiting labels and embracing the full spectrum of who we are. It’s a silent rebellion against conventional expectations and a testament to the power of versatility.

So, dare to be unorthodox. Embrace your contradictions. Reject the labels and tell your own story. By doing so, you’ll not only carve out a unique path for yourself but also inspire others to do the same.

Stay curious, stay versatile, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.

How Motherhood Is Just Like Running a Business

As a mother and business owner, I’ve come to realize that the skills required to excel in both roles are strikingly similar. The multitasking, the planning, the emotional investment, and the sheer determination needed to succeed as a mother mirror the qualities necessary for running a successful business. Owning and operating an orthodontics practice, an online candle company, and a blog that has blossomed into a small business has given me unique insights into how motherhood and entrepreneurship intersect. Let’s explore the parallels between these two demanding yet rewarding roles.

By embracing the similarities between these two roles, we can draw strength from our experiences and apply valuable lessons across different areas of our lives. Whether nurturing a child or growing a business, the journey is filled with ups and downs, but the rewards are immeasurable. Let’s celebrate the parallels between motherhood and business and continue to thrive in both realms.

The Start-Up Phase: Bringing a New Life (or Business) into the World

Motherhood: From the moment you find out you’re expecting, your life is consumed by planning and preparing. You read books, attend classes, and seek advice from experienced mothers. You set up a nursery, buy essential items, and mentally prepare for the monumental task ahead. The start-up phase is filled with anticipation, excitement, and a fair share of anxiety.

Business: Starting a business is much the same. You conduct market research, create a business plan, and seek advice from mentors and experts. You set up your office or storefront, invest in necessary equipment, and mentally brace yourself for the challenges ahead. Whether it’s my orthodontics practice, UnOrthoDoc Candle Company, or The UnOrthoDoc blog, the start-up phase for each venture was marked by a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation.

Multitasking: The Art of Juggling

Motherhood: Once your baby arrives, the real juggling begins. You’re constantly balancing feeding, diaper changes, naps, and playtime. As your child grows, you add school runs, extracurricular activities, and social events to the mix. Multitasking becomes second nature as you manage your child’s needs alongside household chores and personal responsibilities.

Business: Running a business requires similar multitasking skills. In my orthodontics practice, I juggle patient appointments, staff management, and administrative duties. With UnOrthoDoc Candle Company, I balance product development, marketing, and order fulfillment. The UnOrthoDoc blog involves content creation, social media management, and community engagement. Multitasking is essential to keep everything running smoothly.

Planning and Organization: The Backbone of Success

Motherhood: Successful motherhood hinges on effective planning and organization. From meal planning and scheduling doctor’s appointments to organizing playdates and family vacations, a mother’s calendar is always full. Staying organized ensures that everything runs smoothly and that your child’s needs are met without constant chaos.

Business: In business, planning and organization are crucial. In my orthodontics practice, I plan patient schedules, treatment plans, and staff rotations. For UnOrthoDoc Candle Company, I organize production schedules, inventory management, and marketing campaigns. The UnOrthoDoc blog requires editorial calendars, content planning, and event coordination. Effective planning and organization are the backbone of any successful venture.

Problem-Solving: Navigating Challenges with Grace

Motherhood: Motherhood is fraught with unexpected challenges. From dealing with a sick child to navigating (anticipated) teenage rebellion, mothers must be adept problem-solvers. Finding creative solutions to everyday problems and staying calm under pressure are essential skills for any mother.

Business: Similarly, business ownership is a constant exercise in problem-solving. In my orthodontics practice, I encounter everything from equipment malfunctions to patient concerns. UnOrthoDoc Candle Company faces supply chain issues, production hiccups, and customer service challenges. The UnOrthoDoc blog involves technical glitches, content dilemmas, and community management. Navigating these challenges with grace is crucial for maintaining success.

Emotional Investment: Heart and Soul

Motherhood: The emotional investment in motherhood is profound. You pour your heart and soul into raising your child, nurturing their growth, and ensuring their well-being. The highs and lows of motherhood can be intense, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Business: Running a business also requires significant emotional investment. My orthodontics practice is more than just a job; it’s a passion. UnOrthoDoc Candle Company and blog are labors of love that reflect my values and creativity. Investing emotionally in these ventures drives me to work harder, despite the inevitable setbacks.

Delegation: Trusting Others

Motherhood: As children grow, mothers learn the importance of delegation. Whether it’s asking a partner to help with bedtime routines or trusting a nanny/babysitter, delegation allows mothers to recharge and focus on other responsibilities.

Business: In business, delegation is equally important. In my orthodontics practice, I rely on a dedicated team to assist with patient care and administrative tasks. UnOrthoDoc Candle Company benefits from collaborative efforts in production and marketing. The UnOrthoDoc blog thrives on contributions from guest writers and community members. Trusting others and delegating tasks ensures that the business can grow and succeed without becoming overwhelming.

Adaptability: Embracing Change

Motherhood: Motherhood teaches adaptability. Children grow and change, and mothers must constantly adjust their approaches to meet new challenges. Flexibility and a willingness to learn are essential for navigating the evolving landscape of motherhood.

Business: Business ownership demands adaptability as well. In my orthodontics practice, I stay abreast of new technologies and treatment methods. UnOrthoDoc Candle Company adapts to market trends and customer feedback. The UnOrthoDoc blog evolves with changing content demands and audience interests. Embracing change and being open to new ideas are key to sustained success.

Finding Balance: The Ongoing Quest

Motherhood: Finding balance in motherhood is an ongoing quest. Balancing the needs of your child with personal aspirations, career goals, and self-care is a delicate act. Prioritizing and setting boundaries help in maintaining a semblance of balance.

Business: In business, balance is equally elusive. Running an orthodontics practice, an online candle company, and a blog requires careful time management and boundary-setting. Ensuring that each venture receives adequate attention while also making time for family and personal well-being is a continuous effort.

Conclusion: Motherhood and Business – Two Sides of the Same Coin

Motherhood and business ownership are two sides of the same coin. Both require multitasking, planning, problem-solving, emotional investment, delegation, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of balance. As a mother and entrepreneur, I’ve found that the skills honed in one role often enhance the other. The journey of motherhood has made me a better business owner, and the challenges of running a business have equipped me with tools to navigate the complexities of motherhood.

Slowing Down: The Secret to a Fulfilled Life

I wanted to share something that's been on my mind lately. You know, we're often caught up in the whirlwind of life—rushing from one task to another, ticking off endless to-do lists, and constantly striving for more. We live in a world that glorifies hustle culture, where busyness is worn like a badge of honor and productivity is often seen as the ultimate goal. But have you ever stopped to wonder if this relentless pace is really serving us?

In slowing down, we open ourselves up to a richer, more meaningful life. We find joy in the little things, deepen our relationships, and discover a sense of peace and contentment that hustle culture could never provide. So, let's embrace the art of slowing down and savor each moment of this beautiful journey called life

I've been reflecting on this a lot, and I've come to realize that the hustle culture we've been conditioned to embrace might actually be doing us more harm than good. It's time we consider the profound benefits of slowing down.

I've been reflecting on this a lot, and I've come to realize that the hustle culture we've been conditioned to embrace might actually be doing us more harm than good. It's time we consider the profound benefits of slowing down.

The Case Against Hustle Culture

Hustle culture promises success, wealth, and a sense of accomplishment. But at what cost? Burnout, stress, and a constant feeling of inadequacy are often the byproducts of this lifestyle. We chase after goals and milestones, yet we often miss out on the simple joys that life has to offer. The truth is, the constant grind can often times leave us feeling empty and disconnected.

Hustle culture never served us because it prioritizes output over well-being, speed over quality, and achievement over fulfillment. It tells us that we are never enough, that we must always be doing more, achieving more. But life isn't a race; it's a journey meant to be savored.

The Profound Benefits of Slowing Down

So, why should we slow down? The benefits are both profound and deeply rewarding. Slowing down allows us to truly live, to experience the fullness of life in all its beauty and richness.

  1. Rediscovering Joy in the Simple Things: When we slow down, we begin to notice and appreciate the little things that we often take for granted. The warmth of the morning sun, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, or the comforting rhythm of rain against the window. These moments, though small, add up to create a life filled with joy and contentment.

  2. Deepening Relationships: Slowing down gives us the time and space to nurture our relationships. We can engage in meaningful conversations, share unhurried meals, and create lasting memories with our loved ones. It's in these moments of connection that we find true happiness and fulfillment.

  3. Improving Mental and Physical Health: A slower pace can significantly reduce stress and anxiety, leading to better mental health. It allows our bodies to rest and rejuvenate, improving our overall well-being. We become more attuned to our needs and can make healthier choices for ourselves.

  4. Enhancing Creativity and Productivity: Paradoxically, slowing down can actually boost our creativity and productivity. When we're not constantly rushing, our minds have the space to wander, to dream, and to come up with innovative ideas. We become more focused and effective in our tasks, producing higher-quality work.

Embracing the Fullness of Life

Slowing down helps us to embrace the fullness of life. It invites us to be present in the moment, to savor each experience, and to find beauty in the ordinary. It's about taking a step back from the chaos and finding peace in the stillness.

Imagine starting your day with a slow, mindful morning. Sipping your tea or coffee without rushing, feeling the warmth of the cup in your hands, and taking a moment to set your intentions for the day. Or taking a leisurely walk in the garden/backyard, breathing in the fresh air, and marveling at the vibrant colors of the flowers. These simple acts can bring immense joy and a sense of peace.

How to Slow Down

Slowing down doesn't mean abandoning your responsibilities or giving up on your dreams. It's about finding a balance that allows you to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Here are a few tips to help you slow down (and ones I’m implementing for myself as well):

  1. Prioritize What's Truly Important: Identify what matters most to you and focus your energy on those things. Let go of the unnecessary tasks and commitments that drain your time and energy.

  2. Create Rituals and Routines: Establishing simple daily rituals, like a morning meditation or an evening walk, can help you find moments of calm amidst the busyness.

  3. Practice Mindfulness: Being mindful means being fully present in the moment. Engage in activities that ground you, such as yoga, meditation, or simply taking deep breaths throughout the day.

  4. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that don't align with your values or priorities. Protect your time and energy by setting clear boundaries.

  5. Take Breaks: Allow yourself regular breaks throughout the day. Step away from your work, stretch, and recharge.

  6. Reconnect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, whether it's a walk in the park or a hike in the mountains. Nature has a way of calming our minds and rejuvenating our spirits.

Trusting the Process

As we navigate this journey of slowing down, it's important to trust the process. Each phase of life brings new experiences and challenges, and it's okay to reevaluate our priorities and make changes along the way. For me, this has meant contemplating the idea of becoming a stay-at-home mom (perhaps part time), or even considering semi-retirement like my husband. It's a lot to think about, but I'm taking it day by day and trusting that God will guide me in the right direction.

In slowing down, we open ourselves up to a richer, more meaningful life. We find joy in the little things, deepen our relationships, and discover a sense of peace and contentment that hustle culture could never provide. So, let's embrace the art of slowing down and savor each moment of this beautiful journey called life.

As dental professionals and enthusiasts continue to explore the benefits of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) in toothpaste formulations, recent research has revealed that a concentration of 10% nano-hydroxyapatite is optimal for preventing decay. Nano-hydroxyapatite, a bioactive mineral that mimics the structure of tooth enamel, has shown promising results in remineralizing and protecting teeth.

How To Build a Resilient Business

This article explores the importance of these factors and offers insights into building a business that can weather economic downturns and remain recession-proof. A need-based business model ensures sustained demand, customer loyalty, and a competitive edge. Choosing a strategic location enhances accessibility, economic stability, and logistical efficiency. By focusing on these critical factors, entrepreneurs can build businesses that are resilient, adaptable, and capable of thriving even in economic turmoil. Embracing innovation, managing costs effectively, and diversifying revenue streams further strengthen the ability to navigate and succeed through economic challenges.

In business and entrepreneurship, success often hinges on the ability to identify and meet a critical need in the market. This becomes especially vital during times of economic uncertainty. Choosing a business model that addresses a real problem and setting up in a location where your services are in demand can be the difference between thriving and merely surviving. This article explores the importance of these factors and offers insights into building a business that can weather economic downturns and remain recession-proof.

The Importance of a Need-Based Business Model

A business model that addresses a genuine need is inherently valuable. Here’s why focusing on solving a problem is crucial:

  1. Sustained Demand: Products or services that solve real problems are always in demand, regardless of the economic climate. Whether it's essential goods, healthcare services, or technological solutions, people prioritize spending on things they truly need.

  2. Customer Loyalty: When a business consistently meets a critical need, it fosters strong customer loyalty. Customers are more likely to stick with a company they perceive as indispensable, providing a steady revenue stream even during economic slumps.

  3. Competitive Advantage: Businesses that solve specific problems can carve out a niche market, reducing direct competition. This allows for more stable pricing and better profit margins.

Identifying the Right Problem to Solve

Identifying a problem worth solving requires a keen understanding of market dynamics and consumer behavior. Here’s how entrepreneurs can pinpoint the right issues:

  1. Market Research: Conduct thorough market research to understand the pain points of your target audience. Surveys, focus groups, and social media listening can provide valuable insights into consumer needs.

  2. Industry Trends: Stay abreast of industry trends to identify emerging needs. Technological advancements, regulatory changes, and shifting consumer preferences can create new problems that your business can address.

  3. Personal Experience: Often, the best business ideas come from personal experiences. Entrepreneurs who have faced a particular challenge themselves are in a unique position to offer solutions that resonate with others.

The Role of Location in Business Success

The significance of location in business cannot be overstated. Here’s why choosing the right location is pivotal:

  1. Proximity to Target Market: Setting up in a location where your target market is concentrated ensures accessibility and convenience for your customers. This is particularly important for retail businesses and service providers.

  2. Economic Environment: The economic environment of a location affects business performance. Areas with a robust economy, high employment rates, and disposable income are more likely to support new businesses.

  3. Local Competition: Analyzing the competitive landscape of a location helps in understanding market saturation. A less saturated market offers more opportunities for growth and less immediate competition.

  4. Logistics and Supply Chain: Proximity to suppliers and logistics networks can reduce costs and improve efficiency. This is crucial for businesses that rely on timely delivery of goods and services.

Creating a Recession-Proof Business

Building a business that can withstand economic downturns involves strategic planning and foresight. Here’s how to create a recession-proof business:

  1. Diversified Revenue Streams: Diversifying revenue streams can mitigate risk. Offering a range of products or services ensures that if one area experiences a downturn, others can compensate.

  2. Cost Management: Effective cost management is crucial. Keeping fixed costs low and maintaining a flexible cost structure can help a business adapt to changing economic conditions.

  3. Strong Customer Relationships: Fostering strong relationships with customers can ensure repeat business. Loyalty programs, excellent customer service, and personalized experiences can enhance customer retention.

  4. Innovation and Adaptability: Businesses that innovate and adapt to changing market conditions are more likely to survive economic downturns. Staying agile and responsive to market changes can provide a competitive edge.

Case Studies of Successful Need-Based Businesses

  1. Healthcare Services: Companies like CVS Health and Walgreens thrive by addressing the continuous need for healthcare services and products. Their strategic locations and comprehensive service offerings make them indispensable to consumers.

  2. Essential Goods: Businesses like grocery stores and utility companies provide essential goods and services that remain in demand regardless of economic conditions. Their necessity ensures a steady customer base.

  3. Technology Solutions: Companies like Zoom and Slack saw exponential growth during the pandemic by addressing the need for remote communication and collaboration tools. Their ability to solve a timely problem ensured their relevance and growth.

In business and entrepreneurship, success often comes down to solving the right problem in the right place.

My Recommended Toothpastes with Hydroxyapatite

Everyone is looking for natural alternatives to everything these days, your toothpaste is no different. For many many years we’ve heard our dentists tell us about the importance and benefits of fluoride and why we need to ensure that it exists in all our dental products. I am one of those dentists that have long touted the use of fluoride. The benefits and importance of it still holds true. However, in our quest to find more natural options hydroxyapatite as a fluoride substitute has been getting a lot of attention lately.

There is a pretty distinct difference between fluoride and hydroxyapatite. Fluoride is a naturally found element and in toothpaste it works by building a stronger, more acid resistant tooth surface and thus help to prevent cavities. However, higher doses of fluoride are seen to be possibly unsafe and can weaken bones and ligaments. The amount you’re likely to use in your toothpaste, under 20mg, is safe.

However, the rising interest in natural options has led to exploration into alternatives like hydroxyapatite. However, it's important to note that not all brands offering products with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) meet the recommended concentration of 10% for maximum effectiveness.

What’s the difference between fluoride & hydroxyapatite?

Fluoride, a naturally occurring element, works by fortifying tooth enamel, creating a stronger and more acid-resistant surface to help prevent cavities. However, excessive fluoride intake, particularly in higher doses, may pose risks such as weakening bones and ligaments. The amount typically found in toothpaste, under 20mg, is considered safe.

On the other hand, hydroxyapatite is a natural form of calcium that constitutes 97% of our tooth enamel, with the remaining 3% composed of collagen, water, and proteins. Recognized by our mouths as a familiar substance due to its similarity to our teeth, hydroxyapatite is absorbed by the teeth, filling in fissures and grooves caused by bacterial acids, thereby remineralizing teeth and preventing cavities.

While toothpastes containing fluoride are widely available, I'd like to introduce you to some of my favorite toothpastes featuring hydroxyapatite. However, it's essential to be aware that not all of these brands contain the recommended 10% concentration of hydroxyapatite for optimal effectiveness.

For other nanohydroxyapatite toothpastes that I love, see below:

OLLIE

This toothpaste is one of the first that I’ve encountered to combine the benefits of hydroxyapatite AND fluoride together. Ollie toothpaste has 2% hydroxyapatite, 0.24% fluoride (which is the over the counter standard) and xylitol to fight cavities in more ways than other toothpastes.  Ollie also contains 5% potassium nitrate for sensitivity control, which also pairs well with whitening treatments, or just sucking down cold drinks. You will smile a bit more knowing that you are using one of the most effective toothpastes available and that 10% of profits go to providing oral care basics to those in need.  Since most of us are buying toothpaste online now, we want to make it ridiculously easy. Subscriptions will get the right amount of paste to your door, on your schedule, and can be quickly adjusted with a few taps on your phone.

3 Years of Motherhood: Navigating New Phases and Balancing Life's Demands

My son, Braxton, just turned 3, and it's astonishing to reflect on how much has changed over the last three years. When he turned 2, I thought I was getting the hang of motherhood and thought by now I could ease back into focusing more on my career. However, this past year has shown me that each phase brings new challenges and rewards. Instead of finding it easier to balance work and family, I've been leaning more toward family life and the idea of being a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), or perhaps even semi-retired like my husband has crossed my mind several times. Each day, I’m taking things step by step and trusting God to guide my decisions.

Reflecting on the Past Year

The past year has been transformative. When Braxton turned 2, I was amazed by his rapid growth and development. Now, at 3, he is even more curious, independent, and hilarious! Watching him explore and learn has brought me so much joy, but it also means I'm constantly adjusting my expectations and parenting strategies.

Before Braxton, my world revolved around my career and personal goals. Now, my priorities have shifted significantly. My family’s well-being and happiness are my primary focus. I’ve become more patient, compassionate, and selfless, but also more attuned to my own needs for self-care and support.

The Juggling Act of Motherhood and Career

Balancing my role as a mother and an orthodontist-practice owner has been a complex juggling act. Before motherhood, my career was my main focus. I loved growing my practice, helping my patients, working on professional development, and enjoying spontaneous vacations. However, motherhood has reshaped my priorities and time management.

I’ve learned to delegate more, put down things that aren’t truly necessary, and rely on my team to keep the practice running smoothly, even when I’m not there. Efficiency has become key in managing my work hours, allowing me to spend quality time with my family.

Embracing Family Life

This past year, I've found myself more drawn more to family life. The idea of becoming a stay-at-home mom or a semi-retired dentist has crossed my mind multiple times. Being fully present for Braxton’s milestones, jokes, and everyday moments has become more important to me than ever. I read a quote the other day that said: “75% of all the time you will ever spend with a child is complete by the time they reach 12 years old. And by the time they turn 18, well, 90% of your parent-child time together is already spent.” This made me incredibly sad but also was fuel to really prioritize parenthood.

I’ve started to say no to non-essential commitments and focus on activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Prioritizing self-care has also been crucial in maintaining my energy and presence for my family.

Burnout in Dentistry: A Special Challenge

Burnout is a significant issue in many professions, and dentistry is no exception. The physical and emotional demands of the job, coupled with the responsibility of running a practice, can be overwhelming. Over the past year, I’ve felt this pressure more intensely as I try to balance professional and personal responsibilities.

Recognizing the signs of burnout early and addressing them is essential. For me, this has meant considering a reduced work schedule and exploring the possibility of a more flexible, family-focused lifestyle.

Practical Ways I am Combating and Avoid Burnout

  1. Setting Boundaries: Clearly defining work hours and personal time. Ensuring that I have time dedicated to family and self-care.

  2. Delegating and Collaborating: Relying on my team at work and sharing responsibilities at home. Not being afraid to ask for help.

  3. Practicing Self-Care: Regularly engaging in activities that rejuvenate, whether it’s exercise, hobbies, or quiet time alone.

  4. Staying Connected: Maintaining a support network of friends, family, and professional peers who can provide encouragement and advice.

Trusting the Journey

Each phase of life brings new challenges and opportunities. This past year, I’ve learned that balancing career and family is an ongoing process, not a destination. Trusting God to guide my decisions has provided me with peace and direction. While the idea of stepping back from my career to focus more on family is daunting, it’s also filled with possibilities for growth and deeper connections.

As I navigate these changes, I’m taking things day by day, grateful for the journey and excited for what lies ahead.

Avoiding Burnout

In today's fast-paced world and economic climate, the pressures of work and life responsibilities often collide, leaving many individuals feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Burnout, a state of chronic stress characterized by feelings of exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy, has become increasingly prevalent in the workplace. having gone through these challenges myself, this post explores the nuances of navigating burnout, offers insights into its impact on dentistry (or healthcare in general), and provides practical strategies for combatting and yes, avoiding it.

Understanding Burnout: Burnout can manifest differently for each individual, but common symptoms include fatigue, irritability, lack of motivation, and decreased productivity. It often stems from prolonged periods of stress, unrealistic expectations, and a lack of work-life balance. In dentistry, where practitioners face demanding schedules, high patient volumes, and the pressure to deliver optimal care, burnout is a significant concern.

In today's fast-paced world and economic climate, the pressures of work and life responsibilities often collide, leaving many individuals feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

Burnout in Dentistry: Dentistry is a profession that requires precision, empathy, and resilience (to name a few). However, the demands of patient care, administrative tasks, and continuing education can take a toll on dental professionals' well-being. Long hours spent hunched over patients, managing complex treatment plans, and navigating the business aspects of dentistry can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, the fear of making mistakes, dealing with difficult patients, and the financial pressures of running a practice contribute to burnout among dentists and dental team members.

Practical Strategies to Combat Burnout:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a priority by incorporating activities that promote physical and mental well-being into your daily routine. This may include regular exercise, mindfulness practices, hobbies, reading a book, and spending time with loved ones. Taking breaks throughout the workday/workweek to recharge and relax can also help prevent burnout. For me lately, this looks like reading fiction novels to relax my mind, once per month spa day and taking small trips or mini vacations every few weeks to recharge.

  2. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to prevent burnout from spilling over into other areas. Learn to say no to additional commitments or responsibilities that may contribute to stress and overwhelm. Communicate your boundaries with colleagues, patients, and family members to ensure they are respected. This may be working against me professionally (I’m not sure), but I do not respond to anything work related after 5:30pm or on weekends. I secure these times for myself and my family. My referring docs have come to learn to communicate with me during the work hours.

  3. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out for support when feeling overwhelmed. Whether it's talking to a trusted friend, family member, or professional counselor, sharing your feelings and experiences can provide perspective and validation. Joining peer support groups or seeking mentorship from seasoned colleagues in the dental community can also offer valuable guidance and camaraderie.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to cultivate awareness, reduce stress, and enhance resilience. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating can help you stay present, manage emotions, and navigate challenges with greater ease. Consider integrating mindfulness into your practice or attending mindfulness workshops to deepen your understanding and practice.

Burnout is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across various professions, including dentistry. By understanding the causes and symptoms of burnout, prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, seeking support, and practicing mindfulness, dental professionals can proactively combat burnout and cultivate a more balanced and fulfilling work-life experience. Remember that prioritizing your well-being is essential for providing high-quality care to patients and maintaining long-term professional satisfaction.

With the gig economy booming and traditional employment models evolving, side hustles have become a lifeline for many individuals seeking financial security and professional fulfillment. From freelance writing and e-commerce ventures to consulting gigs and creative pursuits, there's no shortage of opportunities to turn your skills and passions into profitable ventures on the side.

But while starting a side hustle is relatively easy, scaling it into a thriving business requires a whole new level of dedication, strategy, and vision. As your side hustle gains traction and momentum, you'll inevitably face the question: "How can I take this to the next level? How do I turn my side gig into a full-blown thriving business?"

In this article, we'll explore the answers to these questions, diving deep into the art of scaling your side hustle into a flourishing enterprise while maintaining an impressive work-life balance

1. Define Your Vision

First things first, you need to have a crystal-clear vision of what you want your business to become. Defining your vision is not just about setting arbitrary goals. It's about crafting a compelling narrative that inspires you and your stakeholders. Consider conducting a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis to gain a better understanding of your business's current position and future prospects. This analysis can help you identify areas of improvement and potential growth opportunities.

Furthermore, think about the impact you want your business to have beyond just financial success. Are you passionate about environmental sustainability? Social justice? Community empowerment? Integrating your values into your business model can help differentiate you from competitors and attract like-minded customers.

2. Build a Solid Foundation

Every successful business is built on a sturdy foundation. As you work on scaling your side hustle, it's crucial to lay down the groundwork for sustainable growth. Here are some essential steps:

  • Legal and Financial Setup: Register your business, obtain the necessary licenses, and set up a separate bank account. Consider consulting with a lawyer or accountant to ensure compliance and financial stability.

  • Branding and Identity: Develop a strong brand identity that resonates with your target audience. Allocate resources towards professional logo design, website development, and cohesive branding components.

  • Systems and Processes: Optimize your operations by introducing streamlined systems and processes. This could include project management tools, invoicing software, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.

Additionally, prioritize building a diverse and talented team that shares your vision and values. As you progress, connect with peers, mentors, and advisers who can provide direction and encouragement. Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning to drive innovation and excellence within your organization.

If your side hustle operates as a remote business, finding the right coworking space becomes increasingly important for maintaining productivity and fostering connections. Even when traveling, you should seek out coworking spaces that offer networking opportunities, like spaces that host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions where you can connect with other remote professionals and exchange ideas.

3. Focus on Customer Satisfaction

Your customers are the lifeblood of your business. As you scale up, don’t lose sight of the importance of customer satisfaction. Here are some tips to keep your customers coming back for more:

  • Personalized Service: Get to know your customers personally and tailor your offerings to meet their unique needs. Show genuine appreciation for their business and go the extra mile to exceed their expectations.

  • Feedback Loop: Value customer feedback and apply it to enhance your products and services. Whether through surveys, reviews, or direct communication, listen attentively to what your customers have to say.

  • Exceptional Support: Provide prompt and helpful customer support to address any issues or concerns. Invest in training your team members to deliver exceptional service and resolve problems effectively.

4. Embrace Innovation

Innovation is key to staying ahead of the curve, but it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Create a culture of innovation by encouraging experimentation, collaboration, and risk-taking. Dedicate time and resources for research and development to explore new ideas and technologies. Here are some more ways you can foster innovation within your business:

  • Stay Curious: Keep learning and exploring new growth opportunities. Attend industry conferences, read books and articles, and network with other entrepreneurs to gain fresh perspectives and insights.

  • Experimentation: Take calculated risks and try out new strategies. Whether it's launching a new product line, entering a new market, or experimenting with digital marketing tactics, embrace the spirit of experimentation.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with like-minded individuals, businesses, or organizations to foster innovation and drive mutual success. By pooling resources and expertise, you can achieve more together than you could alone.

5. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Cultivating a growth mindset is essential for navigating the inevitable challenges and setbacks that come with scaling a business. Join networking groups, attend industry events, and seek educational opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. Instead of viewing failures as roadblocks, see them as opportunities for learning and growth. Celebrate your successes, but also be willing to pivot and adapt when things don't go as planned.

Final Word

Scaling your side hustle into a thriving business is no small feat. But with the right mindset, strategies, and dedication, it is entirely within your reach. By following the principles in this article and staying true to your passion, you'll be well on your way to transforming your side gig into the business of your dreams.

How to Whiten Sensitive Teeth

You shouldn't have to compromise on achieving a brighter, whiter smile due to teeth sensitivity issues. With the right approach and products, you can effectively whiten your teeth while addressing sensitivity concerns. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore how to navigate teeth whitening with sensitivity, ensuring a radiant pearly white smile without discomfort.

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of whitening. The main reason for this discomfort is due to the bleaching agent, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbide peroxide. This causes a chemical reaction on the tooth surface that increases the porosity of the enamel thus making your teeth sensitive. This discomfort can be pronounced or heightened if you have existing conditions like enamel erosion, exposed dentin, or gum recession. However, by adopting the right strategies (and products), you can minimize sensitivity while still achieving noticeable whitening results.

Understanding Sensitivity and Whitening

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of whitening. The main reason for this discomfort is due to the bleaching agent, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbide peroxide. This causes a chemical reaction on the tooth surface that increases the porosity of the enamel thus making your teeth sensitive. This discomfort can be pronounced or heightened if you have existing conditions like enamel erosion, exposed dentin, or gum recession. However, by adopting the right strategies (and products), you can minimize sensitivity while still achieving noticeable whitening results.

Go Slow and Space Out Treatments

First and foremost, it's essential to approach teeth whitening with sensitivity in mind. Try to avoid in-office treatments or products with high concentrations of peroxide, typically over 10%. These strong formulations can exacerbate sensitivity and cause discomfort. Instead, opt for gentler whitening methods, like some at-home whitening solutions that has a lower concentration of bleaching agent and space out treatments to once every several days. By allowing your teeth time to adjust between sessions, you can mitigate sensitivity and achieve gradual whitening results.

Consistency Is Key

Whitening your teeth when you have sensitivity requires patience and consistency. This journey is not a quick fix but rather a gradual process. Commit to a regular whitening routine and stick to it over time. Consistency is crucial for minimizing sensitivity and ensuring long-lasting results. Remember, slow and steady progress is better than rushing and risking discomfort.

Choosing the Right Products and Ingredients

When selecting whitening products for sensitive teeth, it's essential to prioritize ingredients that address sensitivity while effectively whitening your smile. Look for products that offer these approaches to reduce sensitivity:

  1. Dulling the Nerves: You can choose products containing ingredients like potassium nitrate, arginine and stannous fluoride. These compounds work by desensitizing the nerves in your teeth, reducing discomfort during whitening treatments.

  2. Blocking Access to the Nerves: You can opt for products containing hydroxyapatite, a natural mineral that helps occlude or block the tiny tubules in your teeth. This prevents external stimuli from reaching the nerves, minimizing sensitivity.

  3. Sensitive Toothpaste: You can use a toothpaste specifically geared towards addressing sensitivity issues. For example, Ollie offers a range of oral care products designed specifically for individuals with sensitive teeth. Their sensitive toothpaste combines potassium nitrate and hydroxyapatite, providing dual-action relief for sensitivity while promoting enamel remineralization. After brushing be sure to leave a residue of toothpaste on your teeth (don’t rinse), especially before bedtime, to maximize its effectiveness.

Avoid Ineffective Ingredients

Be cautious of whitening products that claim to be sensitivity-free but lack effective whitening agents. Ingredients like bromelain, PAP, or other alternatives to peroxide may have some whitening effect but may not effectively whiten your teeth and could lead to disappointment. Stick to proven ingredients backed by scientific research for safe and effective whitening.

Whitening your teeth with sensitivity requires a tailored approach and the right products. By going slow, choosing gentle formulations, and prioritizing sensitivity-reducing ingredients, you can achieve a brighter smile without sacrificing comfort. In my opinion, with products like Ollie's whitening strips and toothpaste, you can confidently embark on your whitening journey, knowing that your smile is in safe hands.

As an orthodontist, I've seen firsthand the impact that proper oral hygiene practices can have on a person's dental health. One of the key components of a thorough oral care routine is flossing. As an orthodontist, I've seen firsthand the impact that proper oral hygiene practices can have on a person's dental health. One of the key components of a thorough oral care routine is flossing. However, for many people, traditional string flossing can be challenging, especially for young children or those with limited manual dexterity.

That's why I'm excited about Slate Flosser, a really great alternative to traditional flossing methods. Slate Flosser is an electric flosser designed to make flossing easier and more effective for individuals of all ages. In this comprehensive review, I'll go into the features of Slate Flosser and explain why it's revolutionary for maintaining optimal dental health.

Effortless Flossing Experience

The Slate Flosser boasts an unparalleled ease of use, thanks in part to its ergonomic handle design. Unlike traditional string floss, which demands manual dexterity and precision, the Slate Flosser streamlines the process. Simply by pressing a button, this innovative device efficiently eliminates plaque and debris from between your teeth and along the gumline. Its ergonomic handle ensures a comfortable grip, making flossing effortless, even for individuals with limited hand mobility or coordination.

Advanced Cleaning Technology

Slate Flosser utilizes advanced cleaning technology with:

High-frequency sonic vibrations help to dislodge plaque and food particles from hard-to-reach areas, leaving your teeth and gums feeling clean and refreshed.

Gum sweeps feature ribs and bristles that offer a stimulating massage while effectively removing plaque and food debris. One concern many patients have about traditional flossing is the potential for irritation or discomfort, especially for those with sensitive gums. Slate Flosser addresses this issue with its gentle yet effective flossing action with gum sweeps. This ensures a thorough and efficient flossing experience.

Tongue scraper is designed to remove unwanted particles and bacteria from your tongue and eliminate up to 30% more odor-causing bacteria compared to a regular toothbrush. The tool’s shape mimics the natural curvatures of an extended tongue making it soft and effective to use.

Multi-use floss heads are made with 450 strands that are free of wax, Teflon, PFAS and PTFE. It is designed to be multi-use, just rinse and let air dry like your toothbrush. The woven, high-grade floss was specifically created to easily glide through tight teeth and access the problem areas.

Slim, ergonomic design allows for easy maneuverability, enabling you to access all areas of your mouth effortlessly. The flosser’s handle eliminates the struggle of trying to reach back molars and makes it possible for every user, regardless of ability or dexterity, to get their teeth truly clean.

For Use with Braces

Bracket Sweeps mimic the shape of the bracket heads, teeth and gums. The slim flosser arm slides easily under the braces wire and between the brackets. The rubber bristles then brush the sides of the brackets as the flosser head slides under the wire. This saves you a significant amount of time compared to using traditional floss and a floss threader. It may sound complicated, but it's as easy as sliding the floss head back and forth from tongue to cheek.

Compact and Portable

Slate Flosser's compact and portable design makes it ideal for use at home or on the go. Whether you're traveling for business or vacationing with family, you can easily pack your flosser and maintain your oral hygiene routine wherever you are.

Perfect for the Whole Family

One of the greatest benefits of Slate Flosser is its suitability for the entire family. From young children who are just learning to floss to older adults with limited dexterity, Slate Flosser makes oral hygiene accessible to everyone. As a dental professional, I not only recommend Slate Flosser to my patients but also use it myself. I can attest to its efficiency and effectiveness in providing a thorough clean, even in hard-to-reach areas. Its ergonomic handle design makes it comfortable to hold and maneuver, ensuring a pleasant flossing experience.

In conclusion, Slate Flosser is a game-changing innovation in oral hygiene technology. Its advanced features, ease of use, and gentle yet effective cleaning action make it the perfect alternative to traditional string flossing methods. By incorporating Slate Flosser into your daily oral care routine, you can enjoy improved dental health and a brighter smile for years to come. Say goodbye to tedious flossing and hello to a simpler, more effective way to clean your teeth with Slate Flosser.

Nano-Hydroxyapatite: The 10% Difference

In recent years, there's been a surge of interest in natural alternatives for oral care, leading to the rise of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) as a promising ingredient in toothpaste formulations. As a dentist who has long advocated for the benefits of fluoride, I've been intrigued by the potential of nano-hydroxyapatite to offer a natural alternative for maintaining optimal oral health. However, as with any scientific breakthrough, it's essential to understand the research behind the claims. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of ensuring that nHAp toothpaste formulations contain a concentration of at least 10% to be as effective as fluoride in remineralizing enamel. You can explore the evidence-based article supporting this claim here.

Origins of Nano-Hydroxyapatite:

The story of nano-hydroxyapatite traces back to the late 1970s when NASA scientists embarked on a quest to address the bone and tooth enamel loss experienced by astronauts returning from zero gravity environments. Their solution? Introducing nano-hydroxyapatite into toothpaste formulations to aid in the restoration and remineralization of tooth enamel. The effectiveness of this mineral was so profound that a Japanese toothpaste company, Sangi, acquired the patent from NASA in 1980, leading to widespread adoption and utilization in oral care products worldwide.

Clinical Efficacy:

Numerous studies have demonstrated the remarkable remineralizing properties of nano-hydroxyapatite, showcasing its efficacy in restoring tooth enamel to its natural state. One such study, published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, highlights the comparable effectiveness of nHAp to fluoride in remineralizing enamel when used at a concentration of 10%. This critical concentration ensures optimal efficacy, as nano-hydroxyapatite works to repair and strengthen weakened enamel, effectively combating tooth decay and erosion.

The Importance of 10% Concentration:

It's important to note that while many oral care brands now tout nano-hydroxyapatite formulations, not all contain the necessary 10% concentration for maximum effectiveness. This concentration requirement is supported by scientific evidence, as studies have shown that formulations with lower concentrations may not deliver the same level of remineralization. As consumers, it's crucial to be discerning and seek out products that meet this standard to reap the full benefits of nano-hydroxyapatite.

Additional Benefits of 10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite:

Beyond its remineralizing properties, 10% nano-hydroxyapatite offers a range of additional benefits that set it apart from traditional fluoride-based toothpaste:

  1. Safe if Swallowed: Unlike fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite poses no risk if ingested, making it an ideal choice for individuals of all ages.

  2. Smoother, Whiter Surface: nHAp fills pores and micro lesions in the enamel, resulting in a smoother and brighter appearance for a more radiant smile.

  3. Sensitivity Protection: Nano-hydroxyapatite fills pores in exposed dentin, providing relief from sensitivity and strengthening weak enamel surfaces.

  4. Enhanced Plaque Removal: With regular brushing, nano-hydroxyapatite adheres to plaque, facilitating its removal and promoting optimal oral hygiene.

As the science of oral care continues to evolve, nano-hydroxyapatite stands at the forefront as a game-changing ingredient in toothpaste formulations. With its proven remineralizing properties and additional benefits, 10% nano-hydroxyapatite offers a safe, effective, and holistic approach to maintaining optimal oral health. By understanding the origins, clinical efficacy, and importance of proper concentration, consumers can make informed choices and unlock the power of nano-hydroxyapatite for a brighter, healthier smile.

10 Easy Tips For Maintaining A Pearly White Smile

We all want sparkly white teeth! Your smile is often times the first thing someone notices when they look at you so it makes sense to want to keep your teeth in tip top shape. While I do recommend you go the professional route, here I offer 10 alternatives to whitening your teeth professionally.

While I do recommend getting your teeth professionally whitened, there are other ways to get your teeth white, especially if you have sensitivity. IIn office whitening however is the most efficient and safest way to whiten your teeth. With in-office treatment, the dentist uses a solution that usually contains ~35% carbide peroxide to get you instantly white teeth. Custom whitening trays can also be done by your dentist or Orthodontist. These whitening systems usually contain a 10-15% solution of carbamide peroxide. You get the trays to take home and use as directed.

[Updated March 2024]

We all want sparkly white teeth! Your smile is often times the first thing someone notices when they look at you so it makes sense to want to keep your teeth in tip top shape. Getting your teeth whitened professionally at your Dentist or Orthodontist’s office is the quickest way to get a confidence boost, but it can be a bit pricey. While I do recommend you go the professional route, here are some easy alternatives:

www.theunorthodoc.com white teeth.png

easy tips to keep and maintain those pearly whites:

  1. Choose the right shade of lipstick! Certain lip colors can make your teeth appear whiter. Colors like red and bright pink can really make your smile pop.

  2. Instead of coffee, tea, red wine, cranberry juice and other chromogenic beverages that stain your teeth, try drinking more water or other clear drinks as alternatives.

  3. If you are like me and must have tea (or coffee) try drinking from a straw. This will reduce the surface area that the beverage covers and thus reduce staining. You can also try coffee that doesn’t stain your teeth as much like the Golden Ratio coffee brand.

  4. Teeth appear whiter amongst tanned skin tones. If you are of a lighter complexion you will notice that your teeth appear darker or more yellow in the winter months and brighter in the warmer months when you get a tan. A quick hack is to get a tan! In the winter months try tanning products or a tanning bed.

  5. Whiten While You eat! Certain foods such as soy sauce, berries and curry stain your enamel, fibrous foods like apples, celery, carrots, spinach, broccoli and lettuce actually work to remove stains by exfoliating teeth.

  6. Wear contrasting colored outfits. If you don’t have really white teeth then up against a white blouse they will tend to look discolored. Choose an off-white or cream-colored shade instead. To make them really pop wear colors like black or red.

  7. Brush daily (at least 2x) with a whitening toothpaste, and floss! There are tons of options on the market. Some of my favorite whitening toothpastes are Crest 3D White, Crest 3D White Brilliance and Sensodyne true White (for the with sensitive teeth).

  8. Invest in an electric toothbrush. This is the very effective at removing extrinsic stains, which are embedded on the exterior of the tooth surface. There are many options available, you can start by checking the my resources page.

  9. Whitening Strips, gels and tablets are great and do work when used consistently. Whitening strips contain a concentration of carbamine peroxide (the agent that whitens teeth) roughly six times stronger than toothpastes (6-10%). This amount of solution is enough to start penetrating your dental pores and lifting deeper stains. Some of these strips and gels (and there are many) include Crest White Strips, Smile Brilliant and Bright White to name a few.

  10. Last but not least, see your dentist regularly.

All the above are great and easy ways to maintain a beautifully white smile but I do recommend getting your teeth professionally whitened first. It is the most efficient and safest way to whiten your teeth.

Silent Ambition: Let Your Success Speak Louder Than Your Words

Once, I excitedly shared a promising business idea with a colleague, hoping to team up and bring it to life together. Instead of collaboration, I received a polite decline. Months later, I was taken aback to discover that my colleague had launched a business—selling the very idea I had shared with her.

In a world where oversharing is the norm, where every meal and milestone is broadcasted on social media, it may seem counterintuitive to keep your ambitions under wraps. But in reality, there's immense power in working quietly and letting your success make the noise.

Preserving your energy is paramount when pursuing your goals. By keeping your ambitions close to your chest, you shield them from the draining effects of external opinions and judgments. Rather than expending energy defending or explaining your vision, you can channel it into the actual work itself.

Moreover, working in secrecy helps you avoid the pitfalls of unwanted criticism. Not everyone will understand or support your vision, and their doubts can infiltrate your psyche if you're not careful. By toiling away in silence, you give yourself the time and space to build a strong foundation. When you eventually unveil your successful product or business, it becomes much harder for detractors to cast doubt on your idea.

Secrecy also fosters genuine passion. Free from the need for external validation, you can cultivate intrinsic motivation for your goals. Working diligently in the shadows allows your passion to flourish without the distractions of seeking approval.

Furthermore, keeping your ambitions private helps you evade unnecessary competition. A brilliant idea can attract copycats, but by maintaining confidentiality until you're ready to launch, you can prevent unwanted rivals from stealing your thunder.

Strategic timing is another advantage of working in silence. Surprise can catch competitors off guard, giving you a crucial edge in the marketplace. As Sun Tzu famously said, "Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt." By keeping your plans under wraps, you retain control over timing and maximize the impact of your reveal.

Flexibility and independence are also key benefits of maintaining secrecy. Plans rarely unfold without hiccups, and by keeping your strategy private, you have the freedom to pivot and adjust without the pressure of external expectations.

In conclusion, there's a unique power that comes from working in silence, away from the spotlight. Let success be your loudest statement, and when you achieve your goals, your accomplishments will speak volumes—far louder than words ever could. So, the next time you're tempted to share a brilliant idea with the world, remember the strength of silent ambition and let success do the talking.

The Power of Contract Negotiation

Contracts represent more than mere agreements; they are the conduits through which we navigate our professional journeys. Yet, all too often, these agreements tilt in favor of one party, leaving the other to grapple with the remnants of unfulfilled potential. For women, who historically have faced unique challenges in the realm of contract negotiation, reclaiming their rightful portion of the divine plan can be a transformative act of empowerment.

Contracts represent more than mere agreements; they are the conduits through which we navigate our professional journeys. Yet, all too often, these agreements tilt in favor of one party, leaving the other to grapple with the remnants of unfulfilled potential. For women, who historically have faced unique challenges in the realm of contract negotiation, reclaiming their rightful portion of the divine plan can be a transformative act of empowerment.

defining your worth: YOUR DIVINELY ORDAINED PORTION

At the heart of every negotiation lies the recognition of one's inherent worth. It's about acknowledging the unique talents and gifts bestowed upon you by a higher power and demanding nothing less than what you deserve. Your divinely ordained portion encompasses the abundance meant for you, a legacy waiting to be claimed.

THE TALENT EXCHANGE CONUNDRUM

Too often, women find themselves navigating the labyrinth of corporate structures, their talents commodified and undervalued. Whether in the realm of medicine, where doctors generate substantial revenue for corporations while receiving only a fraction of the proceeds, or in other industries, where the gender pay gap remains an enduring challenge, the need for equitable contracts has never been more pressing.

Embracing Independence and Freedom

In response to this imbalance, a growing number of women are embracing independence and entrepreneurship. The rise of personal branding and the pursuit of greater autonomy signal a shift towards reclaiming control over one's destiny. Yet, the path to independence is not without its challenges, and for many, negotiating contracts with corporations or other entities remains a necessary step.

The Importance of Contract Negotiation

For those who choose to work with others or organizations, it's crucial to arm yourself with effective contract negotiation tactics. Negotiating, especially for women who might face unique challenges, involves shifting your mindset to ensure you receive what you deserve.

Key Negotiation Tactics

  1. Learn to Say NO: Overcoming the fear of rejection is the first step in asserting your true worth. Genuine negotiation often begins with a refusal to accept the status quo.

  2. Ask for More Than You Want: Boldness pays dividends in negotiation. By requesting more than you anticipate receiving, you create room for compromise and demonstrate your value.

  3. Be Willing to Walk Away: Your willingness to walk away from an unfair deal is a powerful bargaining chip. Establish your deal-breakers and stand firm in your convictions.

  4. Seek Legal Counsel: In the complex landscape of contract negotiation, legal expertise is invaluable. A skilled attorney can help decipher legal jargon, identify potential pitfalls, and advocate on your behalf.

The Path Forward

As you embark on your journey of negotiation and self-discovery, remember that your worth is non-negotiable. Whether you choose to work within established frameworks or carve out your own path, the ability to negotiate effectively is your greatest asset. It's a skill that evolves with practice, empowering you to shape your destiny and secure your rightful portion of abundance.

In the pursuit of equitable contracts and fair treatment, may you find the courage to advocate for yourself and others, paving the way for a future where every woman receives her due.

Designing Your Life with Purpose and Freedom

In today’s world we often equate success with material wealth and possessions. It's easy to get caught up in the rat race of accumulation. Whether you're climbing the corporate ladder in a 9-5 job or running your own business, the pressure to chase after money and status can feel overwhelming. However, there's a different approach—one that prioritizes intentional living and designing your life around what truly matters.

Intentional living is about aligning your actions and choices with your values and goals, rather than simply going through the motions dictated by societal norms or external expectations. It's about consciously crafting a life that brings you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose, regardless of your financial situation or professional aspirations.

We often equate success with material wealth and possessions. It's easy to get caught up in the rat race of accumulation, especially here in the US.

For those in a traditional 9-5 job, intentional living begins with a shift in mindset. Yes, it's important to invest wisely, save money for the future, and plan for financial security. However, true wealth is not measured solely by the size of your bank account or the number of possessions you own ( I know deep down you already know this). Instead of chasing after material wealth, focus on cultivating richness in experiences, relationships, and personal growth.

One key aspect of intentional living is redefining the purpose of work. Instead of viewing your job as a means to an end—a way to earn a paycheck so you can afford a lifestyle—consider how your work can contribute to your overall well-being and happiness. Rather than striving for a higher salary or a corner office, prioritize work that aligns with your values and allows you to make a meaningful impact in your community and/or the world.

For entrepreneurs and business owners, the principles of intentional living apply equally—if not more so. While it's natural to have financial goals and aspirations for your business, it's essential to remember that the purpose of entrepreneurship extends far beyond profit and wealth accumulation. Instead of chasing after luxuries like yachts or multiple vacation homes (even though nothing is wrong with that), focus on designing a business that provides you with the freedom to live life on your own terms.

This means starting with a lifestyle design goal rather than a revenue target. Ask yourself: What kind of life do I want to live? What activities bring me joy and fulfillment? How can my business support and enhance my desired lifestyle? By answering these questions, you can create a clear vision for the kind of life you want to lead and then reverse-engineer your business goals to align with that vision.

In practical terms, this might mean prioritizing time over money, building a business that allows you to work remotely or on a flexible schedule, and outsourcing tasks that don't align with your core strengths or bring you joy. It might mean setting boundaries around your work hours to ensure a healthy work-life balance, or investing in experiences like travel, personal development, or quality time with loved ones.

Ultimately, intentional living is about taking ownership of your life and intentionally designing it in a way that brings you fulfillment, freedom, and joy. It's about recognizing that true wealth is measured not by the size of your bank account, but by the richness of your experiences and the depth of your connections. By embracing intentional living, you can create a life that is authentically yours—one that reflects your values, passions, and purpose.

In the bustle of modern life, finding a delicate balance between work and family can be akin to walking a tightrope. As an orthodontist and practice owner alongside my husband, a general dentist, with a lively two-year-old in tow, life is a constant juggling act. Amidst the myriad responsibilities, we've found a beacon of organization and harmony in an unexpected place: the weekly family business meeting.

The Family as a Business: Strategy and Regular Check-ins

Our family, much like a business, requires strategic planning and, most importantly, regular check-ins. The weekly family business meeting has become our compass, guiding us through the maze of tasks, appointments, and familial responsibilities. It's a designated time to synchronize our calendars, discuss the upcoming week's events, and ensure we're all on the same page.

Balancing Act: Work-Life Harmony

Maintaining a harmonious equilibrium between our professional and personal lives is no small feat. The family business meeting allows us to recalibrate, ensuring neither work nor family takes an undue toll. It's a deliberate effort to strike a balance, acknowledging that the success of our family is intrinsically linked to the success of our professional endeavors.

Delegating: The Art of Sharing Responsibilities

One of the key lessons learned through these meetings is the art of delegation. Recognizing that we can't do it all, we've embraced the support of hired help, whether it’s a family member, a nanny, a housekeeper to keep our home in order, and occasional babysitters for those rare moments of solitude. Delegating tasks allows us to focus on what truly matters: the well-being of our family and the success of our practices.

Roles and Responsibilities: Creating Order in Chaos

Assigning roles within the household, devoid of rigid gender stereotypes, has been pivotal. Everyone, regardless of age, has a part to play. Whether it's ensuring the toys are picked up, organizing family outings, or managing the household finances, having defined roles instills a sense of order and responsibility.

Proper Planning: A Pillar of Success

In the world of dentistry, proper planning is the linchpin of success. The same principle applies at home. Our family business meetings delve into long-term planning—financial goals, vacations, and even the occasional date night. This foresight allows us to anticipate challenges and celebrate victories together.

Conclusion: Nurturing the Dual Identity

As the dual identity of a dental power couple and a loving family intertwines, our weekly family business meetings serve as the crucible where the alchemy of strategy, communication, and love transpires. It's our commitment to ensuring that the tapestry of our lives, woven with professional and familial threads, remains resilient, vibrant, and harmonious. In the symphony of our existence, the family business meeting is the conductor that orchestrates a melodious rhythm, blending the diverse notes of our lives into a harmonious tune.
