8 Must-Listen Podcasts By Black Women
I am admittedly a podcast junkie. I might need help with this addiction. I learn so much from podcasts and they are a very convenient way to gain knowledge, gather information or simply get whisked away by storytelling.
I am admittedly a podcast junkie. I might need help with this addiction. I learn so much from podcasts and they are a very convenient way to gain knowledge, gather information or simply get whisked away by storytelling. Podcasting is a big business and one that is expected to keep growing. Once upon a time I considered going into it but currently opting to be a guest instead. Did you catch my first guest appearance on The Dental Diaries Podcast? Here you go.
Podcast listening by women increased by 14% in 2018. Yet, podcasting remains a genre mostly used and created by white people. However, in more recent years black people, black women in particular, are turning to podcasting as a way to amplify their voices. With that in mind, here are 8 of my favorite podcasts by black women:
1. Courtney Sanders Podcast- On The Courtney Sanders Show (formally known as The Think and Grow Chick Podcast), host Courtney dives into entrepreneurship, finances, spirituality, and personal growth topics that are sure to kick you in the butt to chase your goals
2. Myleik Teele’s Podcast - Myleik is the CEO of curlBOX and is on of my favorite people to follow on social media. She constantly drops gems and shares her insights, things she learned along the way of becoming an entrepreneur in hopes that her audience won’t have to do it the hard way.
3. Therapy For Black Girls - Joy Harden Bradford, PhD is a licensed Psychologist based in Atlanta. Her podcast provides a weekly share session on all things mental health and personal development. Dr. Bradford touches on the latest mental health news and trends, as well as provides practical tips and answers listener questions.
4. H.E.R Space- H.E.R. stands for healing, empowerment and resilience. In this podcast hosts Terri Lomax and Dr. Dominique Broussard are the catalysts for meaningful conversations and provides a space for black women to just…be. Expect discussions anywhere from “fibroids to fake friends.”
5. Hey, Girl Podcast - Created with sisterhood and storytelling in mind Alex Elle sits down with people who inspire her. She unites the voices of phenomenal women near and far.
6. Clever Girl Finance - This was one of the first financial podcasts I listened to on my personal finance journey. It is hosted by Bola Sokunbi and is a platform for financial education that assists women to get out of debt, save, and build their wealth. If you’re looking to improve, maintain or build upon your wealth, this one is for you.
7. Side Hustle Pro - All things side hustle is right up my alley and this is one of my go-to resources when I need to get motivated on my own journey. It is hosted by Nicaila Matthews Okome and she shines the spotlight on black women who have scaled their side hustles to profitable, established businesses in an effort to assist listeners to learn actionable strategies they can apply in the infancy stages of their business.
8. Rants & Randomness - Hands down one of my favorite people on social media. Luvvie Ajayi is the perfect blend of intelligence and hilarity. She is known for being a NYT best-selling author and blogger at AwesomelyLuvvie.com, but she prefers to call herself a side-eye sorceress and professional troublemaker. In this hilarious podcast Luvvie rants about society and all things pop culture.

My First Podcast Experience
It was an honor being a guest on The Dental Diaries Podcast with Dr. Jessica Emery and a great way to experience my first podcast interview. In the episode we discussed my multi-passionate nature which includes Philanthropic projects, Candle Making, Blogging and Orthodontics - lending to the name The UnorthoDoc.
Last year I considered starting a podcast after getting several requests from readers to implement an audio version of my posts so they could listen on their commute to work or while at the gym. The requests came with a lot of excitement because it was proof that people were reading my blog posts and found them valuable enough to want to listen. I showed the emails to my husband and like the supportive person he is, he immediately took to the internet to research and compare podcasting equipment. Within a week I was fully equipped with a microphone and headset along with a wealth of knowledge about podcasting platforms. I even subscribed to a few newsletters that offered information on starting and building a podcast. We recorded my first episode and I remember disliking the sound of my voice. Feeling discouraged I decided not to publish the recording and instead took a break with hopes of picking it back up later. As we know, time goes by quickly and I realized almost a year had passed.
It would be February 2020 before the idea of podcasting came up again. I had a format, a layout of topics to discuss and a short list of initial guests. After realizing how much work was required I once again put it down and expressed to my husband that my desire was to just be a guest on others’ podcast rather than have my own.
As the Universe would have it, about two months later I was contacted by Dr. Jessica Emery. If you’ve never heard of her, she is the owner of two 7-figure dental practices in Chicago (Sugar Fix Dental Loft and WhiteHaute) and is the creative genius of Dental Soiree, a Boutique Digital Dental Marketing Agency where she helps other dental professionals brand and market their businesses. She is literally a Jill of all trades and one of the very few people that I truly admire and thinks of as #goals.
During our conversation she mentioned she had been watching me on social media and was impressed with my endeavors and wanted us to chat. She then mentioned that she would be airing our conversation on The Dental Diaries, her podcast . This would be my first podcast appearance.
It was an honor to chat with her and a great way to experience my first podcast interview. In the episode we discussed my multi-passionate nature which includes Philanthropic projects, Candle Making, Blogging and Orthodontics - lending to the name The UnorthoDoc.

Best Money/Finance Podcasts for Young Professionals
On the path to becoming a professional regardless of the field you’re in, the focus has been getting to the place where we finally start our careers. Nobody taught us anything money or finance related. We lacked knowledge regarding taxes, refinancing/consolidating student loans, insurances, retirement, and investing.
On the path to becoming a professional regardless of the field you’re in, the focus has been getting to the place where we finally start our careers. We have been through many years of schooling - studying, passing classes, maintaining grades, matriculating, improving skills, applying for residencies and specialty programs. The remaining time was utilized to catch up on sleep, exercise and balance family and social life. Nobody taught us anything money or finance related. We lacked knowledge regarding taxes, refinancing/consolidating student loans, insurances, retirement, and investing.
I began listening to finance/money podcasts when I started my career as an Orthodontist. I went from having no income to a substantial salary that I wasn’t quite sure what to do with. I know I wanted to make smart financial decisions and improve my financial literacy but didn’t know what professionals to seek or even what types of questions to ask.
Undoubtedly my CPA and friends with experience have been invaluable but I wanted more. I wanted to learn all the financial terminology that I would often hear people speak of, words like index funds, mutual funds, compound interest, asset allocation, capital gains, amortization, differences between 401K, 403b, Roth and the list goes on. I wanted to learn more about financial independence, real estate investments, and passive income.
Books are usually my thing but podcasts have proven to be quite convenient and there have been a handful of podcasts that I listen to religiously and that have helped me tremendously over the last several months.
Afford Anything - This podcast is one of my favorites as Paula Pant is all about Financial Independence and is a big proponent to the FIRE movement. FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. She’s 34, retired, financially independent, has zero debt and makes a living through real estate investing, blogging and podcasting. She introduces listeners to different ways to build passive income and rid yourself of a 9-to-5 job.
Stacking Benjamins - I love this because the guys on this show drop so many financial gems but do so in a very lighthearted and fun way. Their humor and jokes may give the perception of lack of serious-mindedness but if you listen beyond that it is evident their focus is on helping their listeners build wealth.
Smart Passive Income - I’m all about passive income so naturally I gravitated towards this podcast. Pat Flynn is awesome! He frequently pulls in over $100, 000 per month in passive income. He gives his listeners different ways to go about setting up passive income streams and his podcasts are always inspiring.
The Side Hustle Show - I love this podcast because they offer great tips and business strategies for those looking for multiple income streams. If you want to perhaps keep your 9-5, supplement your income and have a few extra bucks here and there this podcast is certainly for you. It’s very informative and every time I listen I learn ways to improve my own side hustle(s).
Choose FI - The podcast is great! Here FI stands for financial Independence and the hosts discuss life optimization strategies that are possible when we decide to get off the hamster wheel.
Profit Boss with Hilary Henershott - I recently started listening to this podcast and it has been quite informative. It’s geared towards women who want to take charge and create success in their financial lives. It has been very motivating and inspiring.
So if you’re looking to improve your financial situation, gain financial independence, retire early, start a side business or have passive income then I definitely recommend the above podcasts. Listen to episodes during your commute, at the gym, while running, etc. The knowledge gained can enlighten your path and brighten your future. Feel free to give feedback on your experience.
Happy Listening!
